These Are the Best Plants to Keep in Your Bedroom

Adding greenery to your bedroom can come with a lot of benefits. Not only can plants add more visual interest to your decor, but they can also have calming and uplifting effects on your mood, and (quite literally) breathe more life (oxygen) into your room. However, before you go overboard picking up new plants at your local nursery, its important to learn about the specific care requirements so that you don't end up wasting money or time on plants that won't work for your room or your lifestyle. It's also good to know which plants are generally considered the best plants for bedrooms, based on their ease of care, lighting needs, scent, and even their circadian rhythm habits.

12 Home Decor Tips for a Mental Health Boost (That Have Nothing to Do With Decluttering)

Snake Plant

GETTY IMAGES/INNA LUZAN

Snake plants, a common succulent, are known for being a great plant for beginners, since they're so easy to grow. “Snake plants are very versatile and are suitable for a wide range of lighting, including low, indirect light to afternoon direct sun,” Paris Lalicata, plant expert at The Sill, says. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering—this could be every one to two weeks in the spring and summer months or even every two to three weeks in the fall and winter.

An added benefit? They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night—something that most houseplants only do during the day—which makes them a great companion to have at your bedside.

Calathea

GETTY IMAGES/COINUP

The uniquely patterned, colorful foliage of calathea plants make them a great choice for sprucing up your bedroom decor. Lalicata says this species is also good to keep near your bed because it can signal when it's getting close to bedtime. Calatheas do this through nyctinasty movement, which means they move their leaves up at nighttime and lower them in the daytime in accordance to a circadian rhythm (and in order to maximize light absorption).

Calatheas thrive in medium to bright indirect light, but can tolerate low indirect light. This species is typically moisture loving, so it’s best to water them when about half the soil has dried out. This could be weekly in the spring and summer months or every 10-14 days in the fall and winter depending on environmental conditions.

Philodendron

GETTY IMAGES/CCELIAPHOTO

Philodendrons have beautiful, heart-shaped leaves and quick-growing trailing vines, which can help to make any bedroom look and feel like a lush jungle. Philodendrons will grow faster when exposed to medium-bright indirect light so it’s best to place or hang it near a window.

According to Lalicata, philodendrons prefer to dry out between waterings, which could be every seven to 10 days depending on conditions in the home. They will also physically display when they are ready for water when the leaves start to droop and curl inwards.

Money Tree

GETTY IMAGES/POLINA SERGEYEVA

The money tree is said to bring good luck and fortune, making it the perfect plant to add to the bedroom to create good Feng Shui. It is known for its resilience, ease of growth, and unique braided trunk. “This plant is not low-light tolerant so it needs sufficient sunlight in order to thrive,” advises Lalicata. “It will do best in medium-bright indirect light with dappled direct sun, and to water the money tree, check the moisture of the soil and only water when the soil has almost or completely dried out.” This could be every seven to 10 days in bright light or every 10-14 days in shadier conditions.

5 Common Room Layout Mistakes to Avoid, According to Feng Shui

Ficus Tineke

GETTY IMAGES/JENNY SUN

This low-maintenance plant has striking pink, green, and yellow leaves that will add color and dimension to any bedroom. “As long as your bedroom provides ample sunlight, this plant will be a colorful addition and can grow well over 5 feet as it matures, eventually making it the perfect statement plant,” says Lalicata. Ficus, like money trees, also don’t tolerate low light, so it'll need bright light in order to thrive, and Lalicata recommends only watering when the soil has almost or completely dried out.

06of 10

English Ivy

GETTY IMAGES/FLIL

This plant is perfect for hanging baskets and will make an excellent addition to your bedroom. “This fast grower doesn’t need a lot to thrive: Simply plant it in a free-draining soil type, ensure bright indirect light, and water when the top 2 inches of the soil dry out,” Lindsey Hall, botanist and expert contributor at the gardening blog Positive Bloom, says.

07of 10

Peace Lily

GETTY IMAGES/HELIN LOIK-TOMSON

The Peace lily has beautiful leaves and white flowers, making it a lovely and calming addition to any bedroom. Another perk: “They increase indoor humidity, so if you have issues with dry nasal passages, the peace lily is here to help you,” Hall says. Though the peace lily is considered pretty easy to grow, there are some care considerations to keep in mind. “The peace lily is very sensitive to direct sunlight, so keep it in bright but indirect light," Hall adds. "Plant it in a well-draining growing medium, feed monthly during the growing season with diluted all-purpose houseplant fertilizer, and water when the upper part of the soil dries out.”

08of 10

Spider Plant

GETTY IMAGES/DROPSTOCK

Spider plants, like snake plants, release oxygen at night, making them another good bedside companion. They're also quite visually striking, with variegated foliage and long, cascading leaves.

For proper care: “Put your spider plant in low to bright indirect light, make sure the soil is well-draining, and add water when the top 2 inches of the soil dry out,” Hall says.

09of 10

Gardenia

GETTY IMAGES/INNA PANKRATIEVA

If you've got somewhat of a green thumb, you can also add a flowering plant with scented blossoms to your bedroom, like gardenia. “Gardenia generates captivating white blossoms, but it isn’t a good choice for beginners because of its high care requirements,” Hall says. “If you like challenges, some of the care requirements include planting it in a free-draining, nutrient-rich, and acidic soil type and keeping it in bright, indirect light with humidity of at least 60 percent.” She also advises fertilizing it twice at the beginning of the growing season and watering weekly when the topsoil dries out.

10of 10

Jasmine

GETTY IMAGES/DIANAZH

If you struggle with anxiety and falling asleep at night, jasmine is an excellent plant for your bedroom as its sweet scent has a calming, stress-reducing effect. Not to mention, the plant itself is a visual treat, too.

“These are water-loving plants, so keep the soil constantly moist, but pay attention not to overwater it,” Hall says. “The ideal spot for jasmine is near a south-facing window. If these locations aren’t available, keep your jasmine on the windowsills of west- or east-facing windows.”

What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any?

You can order it in five colors and fabric, which includes white, cream, charcoal, gray, and turquoise. I chose the white Pearl colorway. If you want a custom color, then there are over a dozen shades from which to choose.

What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?

If you’re ordering a sofa in any of the colorways, they’re ready to be shipped in around 2–4 weeks.

Delivery and assembly

What was the delivery process like?

The timing of the delivery was quite efficient. From the time I ordered it to delivery, it was around two weeks. The carrier delivered only one large box that weighed around 140 pounds, so this was not something you want to have to lift and move around yourself if you can help it. I allowed the two delivery personnel to lift, carry downstairs, and place it within my newly remodeled basement.

What was the assembly process like? How long did it take and how many people?

It was easy for me and a friend to unwrap the large box and take the bubble- and Styrofoam-wrapped couch out of its packing materials. We were able to get it unraveled and in its place within less than 20 minutes. There were two matching pillows that came wrapped in the package as well.

After installation

What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?

The couch is 89.7 inches wide, 37.4 inches deep, and 31.1 inches high. It was a tad fancy for my newly remodeled basement, but it fit perfectly within the sad and empty living area space. My basement is made for two people to live in, so the size was perfect for both of us cozying up with a book or watching the latest Netflix show. Because the basement walls are only around eight feet high, I wanted a couch that wasn’t too overwhelming in the space. My roommate was happy to be able to migrate from hanging out in the dining space to having a formal living area with the Diane. Because it is a long couch, there is no room for any side tables or lamps, just the couch. If you have an average-sized living room, then the Diane would look great accompanied with a stylish floor lamp and some modern end tables.

Sit test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well-made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

There is a bit of guilt sitting on such a pristine and luxurious white couch, but the seat and back parts of the couch are actually comfortable as well as stylish. I think the throw pillows could have been a bit bigger in order to have more cushion for leaning up against them, rather than being purely decorative.

Lay test:  Is it comfortable? Does it feel well-made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

Being over 80 inches in length allows both me (5' 6") and my roommate (5' 8") to stretch out all the way from one end to the other without really having to curl or bunch up. I wouldn’t recommend the couch for an all-nighter because it doesn’t have a ton of give, but it is a solid choice for laying down to watch a movie.

Is the couch suitable for particular decor styles, and if so, which?

The couch would fit well in with contemporary or midcentury-modern decor because of its curved back and elegant lines. The Diane would fit well in a penthouse suite or design-worthy living room due to both its higher price point and attention to detail fabrication.

Is it durable and practical in a modern home? Is the couch kid- and/or dog-friendly?

Depending on the color (the non-white and cream colors), then I would say that the Diane is durable and practical for adults. I love red wine, and I am too nervous to drink it on my white couch as I have a tendency to be clumsy. However, I think the couch would be great for entertaining as a showpiece (while serving white wine and vodka tonics). Because of the high-end bouclé, felt, velvet, and fabrics of the Diane, I couldn’t see children or pets being on the couch and risk dirty hands or spills. However, for busy households, including children, I would recommend the brand’s Accident Protection plan which is $225 per year and protects against rips, stains, drinks, and spills, whether created by children or pets.

What are the care and cleaning instructions? Do you think stains could be easily removed?

The brand doesn’t readily offer cleaning instructions or advice on the website, which leads me to believe the couch is definitely more of a showpiece and should be treated with the utmost care. I believe day-to-day small stains and rubs could be wiped off easily with a felt cloth. After getting water in the basement during an unfortunate flood in recent months, it is clear from bottom up staining that the couch would need to be replaced if you have any major water issues that originate from the ground. I would recommend keeping the couch in a more elevated room, and not the basement, to protect the fine fabrics as much as possible.

Do the photos do this product justice? Was there anything you were surprised to see IRL?

The photos definitely do the sofa justice, and the unit looks the same as it does in the online images.

Would the couch be easy to move to another room? Would it be easy to move to another home?

The couch is one long piece (not modular), so it would be very tough to try to cut the couch at an angle to get past my other door frames. The couch is also heavy (over 100 pounds), so it would also be necessary for at least two people to move it. Because the Diane is such a stunning piece, I would definitely want to take it to my new home, although it would need to be planned out in advance with a large and long truck or van and four strong hands.

Essential camping gear for camping un-enthusiasts

Camping isn’t just for the adventurous among us. Those who prefer the indoors, or simply an actual bed, can learn to love it, too—as long as they bring the right gear.

“Accidents, issues, or annoyances on a camping trip usually occur or escalate because of the decisions you made at home,” said Marty Parichand, founder of Outdoor New England, a gear shop based in Franklin, NH. “Be sure to enjoy your downtime by packing gear like a water bottle, hiking boots, and bug spray. Missing any of these could result in a good day turned bad.”

Below, we’ve rounded up our favorite things to bring camping to ensure an enjoyable night in the great outdoors, even if you’d rather be staying in a hotel.

Spark Ultralight Sleeping Bag

Starting at $269

Staying warm while sleeping is essential to any successful camping trip. To ensure comfort, invest in Sea to Summit’s mummy-style Spark Ultralight Sleeping Bag, which is engineered to keep you warm at the lightest weight and smallest compressed size. Ultra-light doesn’t mean small, however—the bag is snug but still has plenty of wiggle room for active sleepers. It’s also made with ULTRA-Dry Down 850+ to protect from external moisture and internal condensation, making it suitable for all sorts of weather.

Don’t Bug Me! Bundle

If not you, there’s guaranteed to be someone in your group who’s a magnet for mosquitos. Instead of hiding in your tent all night, come equipped with Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve Company’s all-natural bug repellent, which uses essential oils rather than harsh chemicals to keep bugs away. The “Don’t Bug Me! Bundle” includes a non-oily body spray, a lotion bar, and a soap so you’ll have several ways to keep your skin safe—and you’ll smell great, too.

Biolite Headlamp 200

Weighing only 50 grams, the Biolite Headlamp 200 offers a comfortable, easy way to see in the dark when you’re camping. You can even tilt down the front panel with a single hand to light the trail from your tent to the bathrooms in the middle of the night. Chargeable via micro USB, the light lasts up to 40 hours on low and three hours on high so you can count on it to last until sunrise, no batteries required.

Elsabet Throw

Starting at $30

Cooler nighttime temps don’t have to deter you from stargazing, especially if you pack Ikea’s Elsabet Throw for cozying up around the campfire. Handmade by skilled craftspeople at the social enterprise Rangsutra in India, each throw is unique but equally comfy. The classic checks and fringes remind us of traditional picnic blankets, and the soft, sustainable cotton fabric means you can toss it in the washing machine if it gets dirty while camping.

Starting $165

Every successful camping trip requires a reliable pair of hiking boots to get you to your site and back. Salomon’s popular X Ultra 3 Wide Mid Gore-Tex version offers the lightweight construction and foothold you need for safe ascents and descents, all with a wider fit for extra comfort. Plus the Gore-Tex material will ensure your feet stay dry no matter what kind of weather or water features you encounter on the trail. Find the women’s version here.

Starting at $35

You can plan all the fun activities you want while camping, but if you don’t stay hydrated, you won’t enjoy any of them. The Ashbury bottle from Avana makes it easy to always have cool water on hand, thanks to its triple-layer insulation and flexible carry loop. It also features a wide-mouth spout for swigging and a built-in straw for sipping, and comes in a variety of colors and sizes. Best of all, every purchase helps provide water to communities in need.

Two-Person Dome Tent

Starting at $24

For high-quality but low-cost shelter, turn to the two-person dome tent from Wakeman Outdoors. Lightweight and compact, it still has plenty of space for you and a camping partner thanks to its spacious interior with high center support. Other features include a dual-layer door for superior air flow, a removable rain fly, and an interior pocket to keep everything organized. With just two fiberglass poles, set-up and tear-down is quick and easy, and when you’re ready to head home, you can throw the tent components in the included carry bag for simple transport.

Adventure Chef 6-Piece Summit Set

Starting at $250

This cutlery set might be expensive, but it’s worth the price to guarantee good campsite cooking. With everything from chef’s and filet knives to a peeler and parer with a fish scaler, you’ll have the tools you need to whip up fresh, delicious meals no matter where you’re camping. Made from the same chef-grade materials as Messermeister’s regular kitchenware, each piece is full size but folds for portability and has an ergonomic handle for easy use outdoors. The set even comes with a waxed canvas case for simple packing.

7 Things You Should Never Do at the Airport Before Your Flight

Whether you’ve just booked your dream trip abroad or decided to hop on a domestic flight to visit family, making sure you’re prepared for travel can feel overwhelming. One of the best ways to ensure a smooth trip is by preparing in advance. Things like securing your passport, making sure you are going through security with the right amount of liquids, and checking in at the airport can all be done ahead of time. Bags packed and ready to go?

Here are seven things expert cabin crew members and travel bloggers say you should never do at the airport to make sure you have a safe and prepared flight, and smooth trip after you land.

Pack travel documents in your suitcase.

One of the biggest concerns for travelers is security of personal belongings. “Keep your boarding pass, ID, passport, and phone in your pocket or an outer compartment of your bag so you can easily grab them when needed,” recommends Miguel Teixeira, director of cabin crew at French bee airlines. “The main thing is to bring the required travel documents, which you should research in advance of your trip. What’s required to travel to this destination? Consult your destination’s official website (take France, for example), as it will list all travel documents required,” he says.

Spend a bunch of money at airport concessions.

Try to purchase snacks and nibbles at the supermarket instead of the airport to save money, advises Teixeira. “Bring your own water flask and pack your liquids together in one easy-to-remove bag. Some airports do not sell plastic water bottles, but there are free filtered water stations across the terminals.”

Board the plane without a transit plan.

Having a transit game plan ahead of arriving at your destination is essential. “Inform yourself about specific pick-up and drop-off points for Uber or Lyft travelers,” says Teixeira. “These may vary depending on the country and legislation. Sometimes it’s not directly at the airport curbside but at a parking lot.”

Buy day-of travel insurance.

Rather than booking your travel insurance at the airport just before your flight, instead buy it at least one day before your departure. “If you choose to wait until the last minute, not only are you unlikely to receive a fully comprehensive travel insurance policy or one at all, but you will also be limited in your ability to cancel your flight for any reason or receive a waiver for pre-existing conditions in some cases,” says Brett Estep, chief operating officer and a founder of Insured Nomads, an insurance company for digital nomads. Purchasing travel insurance can easily be done from anywhere online and is a smart investment to ensure you are covered and protected as soon as you walk into the airport.

Exchange your currency inside the airport.

Be careful about foreign currency exchanges at the airport. “In the U.S., prices are often more expensive and include an exchange rate fee,” says Stephanie, creator of the travel blog Adventures with NieNie. “This not only costs you more to exchange currency, it’s not a fair exchange rate and it will leave you with less than what you bring. I suggest doing a foreign exchange outside of the airport if possible, such as at some hotels or possibly with your bank. The other option would be to use your ATM card and pull out cash at an ATM abroad — there still may be fees, but they are substantially smaller than what the airport may charge.”

Arrive just in the nick of time.

Don’t get to the airport too close to your flight. “With COVID checks and regulations at the moment this is a terrible idea due to the time it takes to check documents, especially when traveling internationally,” says Lauren Scott, blogger at Freedom Not Fate. “Flight schedule changes are also [frequent] right now due to short staff so it’s advisable to check in earlier and give yourself more than enough time.”

Have a cocktail before takeoff.

Be careful of drinking alcoholic beverages at the airport. “The pressurized airplanes contain less oxygen than when they’re 38,000 feet in the sky, making that one cocktail feel more like five,” says Corey Walters, founder of Here, a vacation property rental platform. He suggests ordering a ginger ale instead, especially for those who easily suffer from motion sickness. Save that cocktail for once you’ve reached land.

The Best Underwater Cameras, According to Divers

Plus, the key accessories needed to capture awe-inspiring images of people and marine life.

If you want to capture making a splash while snorkeling, exploring coral reefs and shipwrecks while diving, or catching major waves while surfing, you’ll need a camera that can handle more than just a little bit of water.

We talked to several professional photographers—who also happen to be divers—to get their tips on what to consider before you start shopping for an underwater camera. Plus, you’ll find advice on how to choose everything from waterproof casings for your regular DSLR or mirrorless camera, to floatie handles to attach to your GoPro so it doesn’t sink if you drop it.

Tips for Buying an Underwater Camera

  • Underwater housing is key: To transform your existing camera into an underwater camera, you’ll need to make sure it has a compatible underwater housing available (the case that protects the camera). David Troeger, photographer and CEO of Jetlag Creative Studio, recommends AquaTech’s underwater housings for phones as well as Outex’s soft silicone cases for larger cameras. “When you’re ready to take it to the next level, Salty Surf Housings are made for even the toughest environments,” says Troeger.

  • Consider size and weight: Depending on your personal preferences, you can choose a larger or lighter camera. “Generally speaking, lighter and smaller underwater cameras are always more practical,” says Troeger. “However, many professional underwater cameras are large and heavy, but the benefit is they are buoyant underwater, making it easier to carry than above the water.”

  • Choose the right accessories: Making sure you have the right accessories to overcome the distortion you may get while underwater is key. “For the most accurate pictures underwater, the camera needs a dome shaped lens port, which helps correct light traveling through a denser substance than air,” says Troeger. “Without it, wide angle lenses will create magnifying glass effect pictures. Also, the best camera is the one you’ll always have on you: look for accessories that secure the camera to the wrist, so that it won’t get lost if you’re surprised by a big wave.”

  • Build a budget: With all these accessories, underwater photography can be an expensive hobby. “Be sure that your budget includes the housing, ports, and some lights or strobes, as this will usually cost much more than the camera itself,” says underwater photographer Tom St. George. “You will also want to make sure you have a solid choice of lenses too (generally we use macro, fisheyes and/or ultra-wide angle underwater).”

Taking all of these factors into consideration, here are the best underwater cameras—plus a few key accessories—to take on your next dive.

1. GoPro HERO10 Black

Buy now: $400, gopro.com

“Having a GoPro as an underwater camera is great: it’s small, light, and sufficiently waterproof for most situations,” says Troeger. GoPro’s latest camera model, the HERO10 Black, features 5.3K video, which means you get very high resolution, along with 60 frames per second so you can capture more content in a short amount of time. It also has HyperSmooth 4.0 video stabilization in all modes.

Depending on if you are a freediver or a scuba diver, be conscious of your depth capabilities for all camera models. For example, the HERO10 is waterproof up to 33 feet. Also, capturing your content and storing it in a safe way is key: the HERO10 is connected to a cloud, which means as soon as you plug your cable in to charge it, your footage is automatically uploaded to the cloud. Editing your GoPro content is also efficient with the GoPro Quik app, where you can edit, share, and manage photos and videos.

2. GoPro Bite Mouth Mount and Floaty

Dropping your GoPro in the ocean and watching it sink is not a great feeling, so consider using the Bite Mouth Mount and Floaty which works with the HERO9 and HERO10 GoPro models. With the 2-in-1 package, you are able to get hands-free footage using POV angles if you’re surfing or freediving. 3. Nikon Z 50 Mirrorless Camera

Buy now: from $857 (body only—lenses and underwater housing sold separately), bhphotovideo.comadorama.combestbuy.com

In order to make the Nikon Z 50 fully waterproof, you need to pair it with an underwater housing (our recommendation follows). But the extra investment is worth it, because mirrorless digital cameras have more sophisticated sensors that gather more light compared to a GoPro when on snorkeling or diving expeditions.

This camera works well with a wide variety of Nikon lenses, which comes in handy whether you are shooting macro organisms under the sea or wide angle shots of whale sharks. The digital camera can be used to capture both stills and video and features a 20.9MP CMOS sensor (for nuanced image quality and high sensitivity); EXPEED 6 image processor (for high speed image capturing); a 209-point hybrid AF system with eye detection (for quality image focusing); and a low-light performance to ISO 51200 for capturing content at those deeper depths.

For video shooters, you will benefit from full HD recording at up to 120 frames per second for slow-motion playback, as well as in-camera clip trimming. Ready to share your content? The Z 50 comes with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth that work in conjunction with the Nikon SnapBridge app for wirelessly transferring photos and videos.

The Best Cooking Gear for Camping Trips

After a long day out on the trails or burning some scenic miles in an RV, the last thing you want to do is arrive at your campsite with an empty stomach and no gear. Both for safety and the sake of your stomach, it’s essential to map out a camping cookware packing list ahead of time to use when hunger sets in. “One of the most important camping cook items is a minimal lightweight camp stove, which won’t weigh you down during the day when covering miles on the trail,” says Ted Mahon, adventure concierge at The Little Nell in Aspen, Colorado. “Be sure to check the local rules regarding campfire bans as drought conditions across parts of the country determine what kind of fires or stoves might or might not be allowed. In addition, consider having some water nearby in the event of an emergency.”

Since you’ll need more than just a stove to try out that campfire recipe, here are nine of the best camping cookware items to bring along on your next outdoor adventure.

The U.S.-based company produces the pits in both stainless steel and industrial Corten, which develops a reddish patina as it ages. Also, before lighting any outdoor fire, check the weather to avoid windy conditions that can blow embers.

9 Sneakers You’ll Need for Winter if You Plan on Running in the Snow

Clocking miles during a wintry day? Make sure you've geared up properly, especially with running shoes for snow that can withstand the elements. “When you're picking the best shoes for running in the snow, you want to consider two main aspects: the traction and grip and what kind of protection the shoe provides from the elements,” says Eric Fruth, Co-Owner and Grassroots Coordinator of ColumbusRunning.com. “Ideally, you're looking for a shoe that has excellent grip on wet or icy terrain, and if it features a water-resistant upper or a weatherproof GORE-TEX upper, even better.”

In order to pick the right running shoe for you, look for shoes that list out features and materials specific to wet and cold conditions. “There are running shoes that use a rubber that gets tacky on wet surfaces, and that provides extra traction on everything from wet leaves in the fall to snowy paths in winter, says Fruth. “Some shoes are water resistant, which provides protection from conditions like dewy grass, while others are fully waterproof, ideal for anyone outside in the worst of conditions.” Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran runner, here are the best shoes that will hold up when the snowflakes start dropping.

What Does It Mean to Be An Active Groom

he question was popped, she said yes, and now it’s time to plan your celebration together. “Being an ‘active’ groom first starts with being highly excited and emotionally involved in your wedding,” says Marsha-Ann Donaldson-Brown, Sandals Resorts International's director of romance and weddings. “If I could give one piece of advice to grooms, it would be to show interest, and I mean keen interest, even if they are not the ones making the final decision.” Whether your wedding is going to be a small and intimate affair or a blowout wedding with hundreds of guests, here are key tips on how grooms can be an active part of planning the celebration.

MEET THE EXPERT

Wedding Planning

Showing genuine interest throughout the entire wedding-planning journey is key to being an active groom. “Make sure to establish a time once a week dedicated to updates on planning and decision making,” says Donaldson-Brown. “Grooms and brides should talk about all the fun things like the colors of flowers and types of flowers you two like, your guest list, set dates for cake tastings, and explore what decor and designs you both envision on your special day.”

No matter where a couple gets married, the groom can always surprise and delight his bride. “A surprise treat for the bride could be anything from an enhanced entertainment option at the reception, whether that be a beautiful saxophonist or a pianist, or even a surprise playlist with a few of her favorite songs,” advises Donaldson-Brown.

Family Matters

One of the most important ways grooms can be more active participants in wedding planning is coordinating the wedding details with his family and the bride’s family. For example, when it comes to destination weddings, the groom can also help plan all the fun activities that guests can take part in prior to the wedding. “Start a family group chat and ask family members if they’d be interested in any water sports activities, or if anyone wants to go on an excursion,” advises Donaldson-Brown. “They can also take things a step further and surprise the families with a catamaran cruise a few days before the wedding.”

Take Charge of the Legalities

Being the lead on communicating with the officiant and finding out the necessary details to get everything accomplished that is required based on religious or legalities involved in the actual marriage is an important step for active grooms. “Every state has different rules as to when you need your marriage license and how to get it,” says Susan Zakin, owner of Z Event Company in New Orleans. This is an opportunity for the groom to take charge of the paperwork, phone, and email communication with the state.

Entertainment for the Reception

The bride can defer the choice of the band or DJ to the groom as well as having him create a "playlist or set list.” “We find grooms are instrumental in picking their "first dance" song,” says Zakin. “It is heartwarming to see the thought that goes into this special dance music selection by the groom. One of my favorite experiences is when a groom of ours selected ‘Like Jesus Does’ by Eric Church. Until I listened to the song, I was wondering why he picked that one and I realized he chose it to express how the bride completes him along with religion.”

70 Best First Dance Songs for Your Wedding

Food and Beverage

Grooms can take charge of the food and beverage selection for the reception. “Many men are now 'foodies' and can share input on the different food selections offered as well as the presentation of what is served to their guests,” says Zakin. “The bars are a biggie, too. Since the trend of ‘crafting cocktails’ became popular, grooms have been experimenting and wanting to share some of their favorites with the guests. IPA beer selections as well as local beers from the city they are having the wedding are especially popular, too.

Tastings are a great way to get the groom excited about the big day. I think it makes everything more ‘real’ for them.”

Color Selection

Once the bride and groom have selected their wedding theme and colors, the groom can then decide on his look, and outfit his groomsmen in suits that are complementary. “If the groom is really looking to stand out and make an impact, he can choose to wear a different-colored suit than his groomsmen,” says Donaldson-Brown. “One fantastic way to integrate your wedding colors and themes into the groom’s and groomsmen’s attire is to choose a boutonniere with a pop of color that matches your theme.” Once the bride and groom have decided on the color scheme of their wedding, the groom can coordinate the attire for his groomsmen including any brothers, cousins, and guests of honor such as the bride’s father.

Custom Looks

Custom looks? Yes please. The groom no longer only wears a standard black tuxedo or dark suit, so grooms can take an active role by customizing the look of his attire as well as the groomsmen. “The particular cut and style of the groomsmen apparel and accessories are many times a reflection of the groom’s personality,” says Zakin. “His involvement in the color, cut, or style of what he and his groomsmen are wearing is a great way to personalize the wedding. A favorite photo of mine is one where the groom gave all of his groomsmen particular socks that were each related to the connection to him. They made for such a fun photo while they were getting ready together.”

How to Create Your Own Custom Suit or Tuxedo

Transportation

Oftentimes, buses are necessary to get the wedding party as well as the guests from the hotel to the ceremony, the ceremony to the reception, and then the "getaway" car for the end of the evening. “This can be a stressor for the bride to figure out logistically on top of the other details she has to deal with,” states Zakin. “The groom taking charge of transportation is key. A groom I worked with had a bar set up outside the church for everyone to grab a signature cocktail for the ride to the reception.”

8 Best Trees To Plant for Low-Maintenance Landscaping

Your yard is begging for a nice tree to lend shade and pizzaz to your existing landscape. However, before running out to your local nursery and grabbing the first sapling that catches your eye, it’s important to know how the tree will grow over the years. “In order to choose what trees to plant in your home, first consider your site’s conditions, advises Stephen McFarlane, Regional Landscape Manager at Sandals Resorts International. “Make sure the tree you’d like to plant can survive in your climate and ensure you have suitable soil conditions for it to prosper. Sun exposure, wind, and drainage are also important considerations in regards to proper site conditions.”

Once you’ve determined the function of your tree (i.e. do you want the tree to provide flowers or must it provide evergreen shade all year long), you should consider the maintenance. Some trees drop messy fruit and nuts, while others have invasive root systems that can disturb your yard and home’s foundation. Here are 8 trees that are low maintenance, adapt to a wide variety of soil types, and grow in a range of light conditions:

Jacaranda: Jacarandas are a good choice for a large outdoor area in warmer climates that get tons of sun. “They are resistant to pests and diseases and have good drought tolerance when established,” says McFarlane. “They should not be planted near water features or patios as their striking lavender and blue flowers and leaves can drop into those areas, creating a bit of additional cleanup.  If grown in a large space, its leaves and flowers can be mown and not raked up.”

Sea grape: The Sea Grape is a versatile Florida native plant that can be grown as a small tree. “It is grown in full sun to partial shade and is drought, wind and salt tolerant - perfect for the coastal environment,” says McFarlane. “Prune for size and shape as needed, or leave it untrimmed to create a natural form.”

Frangipani: The Frangipani are easily maintained and will produce an abundance of flowers when planted in a full sun environment. “This fast-growing small tree does well with most soil types but best in well-drained soil,” says McFarlane. “The Frangipani can also tolerate long periods of drought.”

Japanese Maple: The many varieties of Japanese Maple trees will brighten up any landscape with their delicate branches and vibrant foliage that provides year-round interest. “Japanese maple trees can grow across most of the country (except for extreme hot and cold regions),” says Brian Parker, Senior Live Goods Merchant at The Home Depot. “They’re exceptionally low maintenance, adapting to a wide variety of soil types and growing in a range of light conditions.”

Crepe Myrtle: Crepe Myrtles are often chosen as a landscape plant for their long, summer blooming period and prized for their flower clusters in pink, red and white and beautiful foliage. “This plant only requires routine yearly pruning and they drought-tolerant and thrive in heat and humidity, continuing to bloom through harsh conditions” says Parker.

Magnolia: Magnolias grow just about anywhere in the U.S and are known to be hardy and adaptable to a range of soils. “These trees are stunning plants with large and striking blossoms that will improve the look of any landscape,” says Parker. “Evergreen Magnolia trees are typically trouble-free, if you place them in the right spot in your yard. They're also generally pest- and disease-free. Magnolia trees prefer full sun but can also tolerate partial shade.”

Redbud: Redbuds are very popular due its spring flowers, and is also a heat and drought resistant and disease and insect resistant tree. “Redbuds are medium-sized trees, which makes them especially convenient for smaller yards,” says Parker. “Redbuds are available in varieties with deep red foliage, bright yellow foliage, and/or tricolored foliage. It usually forms an umbrella pattern for nice shade.”

Purple Leaf Plum: The Purple Leaf Plum is one of the most popular ornamental trees used in landscaping. “They are technically considered fruitless even though they produce a very small, insignificant seed,” says Parker. “It lends a deep purple foliage in spring through fall, with pinkish white delicate flowers in the early spring. It grows about 12 to 15 feet, so it’s well suited for small yards.”

The 13 Best Bike Shorts in 2021

If you’re planning a cycling trip or maybe just want to experience the outdoors on shorter bike rides, one of the most important parts of your kit is bike shorts. Experienced riders make sure they ask questions like, do the shorts ride up? Do they have a hygienic pad? Or can they comfortably handle long days in the saddle? These answers can determine the difference between a solid day in the saddle or an infamous suffer-fest.

"When looking for cycling shorts for a long-distance tour, comfort is the most important factor," says Barb Hoyt, owner of Timberline Adventures, a bike tour company based in Boulder, Colorado. “Make sure the cut fits your body—snug but not too tight, the padding is cushiony but not too bulky, and the waistband stays comfortable in any position."

A Landscaper's Guide to Artificial Grass

If that patch of brown in your backyard needs attention or piques your interest in a DIY project, consider installing artificial grass, also referred to as turf. “For those looking to have a well-manicured lawn all year long with little maintenance, turf is a great choice,” says Cynthia Castillo, Stock Carpeting Merchant at the Home Depot. “Maintenance is very easy with artificial turf: you can use a blower to clear leaves and occasionally rinse with water to knock down dust, but usually, rainfall will be enough to keep your turf clean.”

If you have a small, shaded courtyard or backyard, consider artificial turf as most species of real grass do not thrive in shade,” also advises Stephen McFarlane, Regional Landscape Manager, Sandals Resorts International. Depending on the location of your space; climate; as well as preference for a low maintenance landscape, here is a guide on choosing and determining if artificial grass is right for you:

When should you use artificial grass at home?

“I recommend artificial grass for low maintenance: once installed, turf requires very little care,” advises Castillo. Some of the other benefits of artificial grass includes no mowing, where lawnmowers make up five percent of the country’s air pollution; saving water; artificial grass is easy to keep clean; and it remains green year-round.

Have a pet that you’d like to let out into your backyard without worry? “I highly recommend Lifeproof with Petproof Technology Premium Pet Turf, which is made with high-performance yarn to look and feel just like real grass with a reduction in maintenance, even under heavy use,” says Castillo. This artificial grass includes “ultra-flo” backing, which provides durable backing against dogs digging and drains two times faster than the industry average, so liquid waste passes and will not puddle.

What is the process usually like for new installation?

Installing artificial turf yourself can be a fun and simple DIY project to tackle this summer. “Your first step would be to measure the length of your yard, and multiply that by its width which will tell you how much grass you need,” advises Castillo. The other steps include removing existing grass and soil; installing bender boards; base materials; and weed barrier cloth for larger installs and weed prone areas. When you are read to install the artificial grass, the process includes cutting the turf to shape; installing nails along the edges and seams along with landscaping staples. Don’t forget to broom in infill, which are products placed in between the synthetic grass blades to help them stand up.

How do you decide which artificial turf is best for you?

Consider the application of your turf: will it be installed in an area where lots of pets and kids play, a front yard with low traffic, or a back yard with high traffic? “A turf with “ultra-flo” backing and high-performance yarn is designed for dimensional stability, easy drainage, and heavy traffic from pets and kids,” says Castillo. “Second, determine what turf looks the most realistic and natural to you: pile height and blade design are important to the natural, realistic look of turf. While turf is designed to last for years of use, I recommend selecting a turf that comes with a longer warranty, at least 8 years, to ensure coverage throughout the life of your artificial grass.”

When is it best to use real grass?

Depending on your lifestyle, location, and ability to maintain your lawn, real grass may be a better fit. “Consider who will be using the space – if children are going to be the biggest users of the space, you’ll likely want to consider real grass because artificial turf can produce surface temperatures that are near asphalt pavement in warm climates,” advises McFarlane. “Real grass is perfect for those who have an adequate water resource to maintain the grass and who don’t mind mowing it once in a while,” says McFarlane. The best person to consult to install either real or artificial grass is a reputable, certified landscape contractor or specialized sod installation contractor.

The 7 Trees You Should Never Plant in Your Yard, According to Real Estate Pros

If you’re thinking of selling your house one day, or maybe you want to liven up your yard by planting a new tree, there are important things to consider before breaking out the shovel. Certain trees come with labor-intensive maintenance, for example, or might inadvertently have you planting invasive species and incurring damage to your property.

“At my first home, there was this massive and beautiful Ginkgo tree that shaded my driveway,” says David Steckel, home expert at Thumbtack. “That tree produced these little orange fruits that would all drop in the span of a week in the fall. If I did not clean them up immediately, they would stain my masonry or worse, my car. If the cold weather came early, it would harden the pulp and that mess would be stuck to my car for the entire winter.”

Steckel advises not planting trees within 10 feet of your home if possible, since some trees have invasive root systems that tend to grow laterally and aggressively like Willows, American Elms, and Silver Maples. These root systems are hydrophilic (water-loving, in other words) and in their search for moisture can invade drains, sewer systems, and lift driveways and sidewalks.

“Another reason to make sure your trees aren’t too close to your home is in case of a fire or drought-prone areas. Some trees like Italian Cypress or Eucalyptus are considered highly flammable,” Steckel says.

When deciding on what kind of tree to plant, it’s worth doing a little research on what kinds to avoid, since one wrong move may deter potential buyers down the road once the tree matures. From Female Ginkgo to Cottonwood trees, here are seven trees homeowners should steer clear of planting.

Red Oak

A beautiful but annoying tree when it comes to maintenance, the Red Oak produces hard-to-clean leaves and acorns. “The tree also produces these little flowers called catkins that when they fall, they’re also quite difficult to clean up,” warns Steckel.

Silver Maple

The Silver Maple is a fast-growing shade tree with a shallow root system that can cause turf and concrete issues. “It’s popular with homeowners and contractors who are looking for a fast shade solution in a new development, but it has terribly weak wood due to its fast growth,” says Brian Parker, senior live goods merchant at The Home Depot. “It also doesn’t sustain wind and snow damage well.”

Mulberry

Mulberry trees are known to be messy because their fruit stains just about everything — like your driveway, walkway, porch, or patio. “In addition to the fruit attracting dozens of birds, the Mulberry’s aggressive roots are large and shallow, and routinely cause damage to irrigation systems and house foundations, cracking pavement and upending landscaping,” Parker says.

Cottonwood

A Cottonwood tree’s rapid growth leads to a weak wood structure, making it susceptible to limb breakage and damage from storms and wind. “Cottonwood trees are not hardy enough to withstand years of exposure to the elements,” advises Parker. “The trees release fluffy, cotton-like seeds in late spring or early summer that stick to just about anything, and they also continually drop leaves and sticks.”

Female Ginkgo

Parker advises against planting a female ginkgo or “maidenhair tree” in your yard because it will bear small round fruits that are not only slippery and fleshy but emit a very foul odor. However, male Ginkgos are a hardy, easy-care type of tree to have in your yard. “It’s a large shade tree with a very long life due to its resistance to disease and insects, so if you buy a Ginkgo, it’s critical to get the correct sex,” Parker says.

Bradford Pear

The Bradford Pear is infamously known for its weak branches that can easily break off in severe weather. Parker notes that its flowers smell unappealingly fishy while also being highly invasive, as its thorny seedlings crowd out native plants.

Sweet Gum

Sweet Gum seed pods or “gumballs” fall in autumn and winter and are very difficult to rake up. “These seed pods have a round, sharp and spiky exterior and the tree’s surface roots can also create issues across the lawn,” Parker says.

How to Create Your Own Drive-In Movie Theater at Home

Hosting a movie night for family and friends can be made all the more immersive with a drive-in theater experience. For that, an outdoor shed or garage can be converted into a drive-in theater fairly easily. "All you really need to get going is a projector, speaker, screen, and extension cord, and you're ready to host awesome movie nights at home," says Thumbtack home expert David Steckel. "You can mount the projector in the ceiling and install surround sound speakers, sound baffles on the ceilings and walls, and put down a beautiful epoxy coating on the floor to give it a higher-end look and feel."

Feeling inspired? Here are four steps to building your dream drive-in movie theater.

Set up the screen.

For power, install an electrical outlet to reach the ceiling mounted projector and for media devices in the back corner of the garage (if using one). In addition, install a retractable movie screen ($299, potterybarn.com) at the back of the garage to allow the screen to be out of the way while cars are parked.

ADVERTISING

Install surround sound.

"I recommend a home theater receiver with 5.1 Surround Sound, which will need to be protected in a media cabinet suitable for outdoor use," advises Amanda Tharp, product manager at ShelterLogic, a company specializing in outdoor shade, shelter, and lifestyle products. "All speakers should be small to medium sized and mountable as you don't want speakers on the ground for when cars are parked."

Streaming is key.

Sharp also recommends you include a streaming device for movies such as Apple TV or Roku device for wireless streaming content. You can also use a PlayStation 5 or Xbox, which are perfect for playing Blu-ray movies and gaming on the big screen.

Consider the light and sound requirements.

Consider sound insulating panels for the walls of your garage or shed as your biggest challenge will be the sound bouncing off of the metal walls. "Sound absorbing panels will help cut down on reverberation and echoes," says Tharp. "So that you don't trip or bump into your newly transformed space, install LED light strips ($29.99, target.com) along the bottom of the walls for safety as well as LED lights for the ceiling for general lighting."

And if you don't know where to start? "We have a lot of audio-visual experts on the Thumbtack platform that can help you purchase, supply, and install not just a movie screen, but the projector, cables, speakers and anything else you'd need to make your backyard a movie oasis," adds Steckel.

What to Look for in an Outdoor Ceiling Fan

Damp Rating

Make sure you confirm that your lamp is either damp or wet rated. A wet rated ceiling fan is one that has a high capacity to withstand rain and humidity, while a damp rated fan can handle some wetness but should be more protected. Wet rated fans are a bit trickier to find, but in most cases a damp rated fan should be fine for most climates. Be careful that all parts of the fan are either wet or damp rated—some fans have wet rated blades but damp rated motors, so should still be protected.

Control Mechanism

Pull chain-activated outdoor ceiling fans are still being made today, but the more popular options are either wall-controlled, remote-controlled, or both. Remote-controlled outdoor ceiling fans sometimes have Smart Home compatibility, which will make them much more expensive but easier to control. Consider your lifestyle and also the number of ceiling fans in your space—if you have two outdoor fans, you'll need to be sure you can control both of them with ease.

Size

The average outdoor ceiling fan has a blade span between 50-54 inches, which is suitable for spaces between 250-400 square feet. If you have a large patio or veranda, you'll need something much bigger, like 70-90 inches. Larger ceiling fans are typically more expensive and there are fewer models to choose from, but you'll be much happier in the long run.

7 Indoor Hanging Plants That Purify the Air and Add So Much Dimension

You can add more greenery to your home in more ways than just putting a plant on the windowsill or in an empty corner. To truly turn your space into an oasis, consider hanging plants from your ceiling or walls—this approach provides oxygen as well and adds an unexpected touch of dimension. "When choosing hanging plants, ensure you have a strong enough beam or structure to hang from first and foremost," advises Stephen McFarlane, Regional Landscape Manager, Sandals Resorts International. "This location should be in an area that receives adequate indirect light," McFarlane adds. "And throughout the year, turn the basket regularly to ensure even growth. Using a soilless mix that contains perlite for your hanging baskets will keep the basket lighter and will improve drainage also. Check soil moisture regularly, water when the top inch of the mix is dry, and fertilize with a balanced slow-release fertilizer every two to three months," he advises. Ready to take on hanging plant parent status? Ahead, discover seven indoor hanging plants that'll add some peaceful green drama to your living space.

Spider Plant

National Plant Networkhomedepot.com$41.47

If you're looking for a wispy oxygen-providing plant, meet the Spider Plant. One of the best air purifying plants, this Southern Africa native features spiky lime green and yellow variegated foliage. The bright and beautiful house plant looks beautiful next to shelving or with a downward hanging trellis. "The Spider plant prefers bright indirect light, but avoid direct sunlight as it may scorch the leaves," says McFarlane. “Keep the plant slightly moist and water it when the top inch of soil becomes dry, as overwatering will lead to root rot. Fertilizing every three to four months with a balanced fertilizer should be sufficient.”

Devil's Ivy

Popularly known as "Golden Pothos," the Devil’s Ivy plant is another one of those easy-growing indoor plants. It is stunning to witness how the leaves and vines on this plant will start to either drop down and spread out of its hanging basket or climb beautifully along your walls. All you need is a low to moderate window light, and “Pothos likes to have its soil drier between waterings, but be careful not to under-water, so watch the leaves for signs of drought stress, like browning, scorched margins," says McFarlane. "Fertilizer should be a balanced granular like 14-14-14 osmocote every three months," he adds.

What to Look For in a Wall Mirror

Shape

Wall mirrors come in practically every shape, although the most common varieties are rectangular and round. If you're looking for something different, do a little digging and you'll find various shapes, including sunburst, oval, square, blob, and even heart. Choosing the best shape depends on the size of your room and the type of impact you're trying to make.

Material

Mirrors come in an array of different finishes, including wood, aluminum, glass, bronze, rattan, and copper. Depending on your style, you might choose a bronze or wood frame for a room with mid-century touches, while a lucite or gold frame might fit better in a more contemporary space. There has been a recent resurgence in boho-inspired rattan mirrors, so if you're looking for something trendy you might want to start there.

Weight

When choosing where to hang your mirror, weight should be the ultimate concern. If you have a few small weighted mirrors, you can put a small nail, or use glue like mirror mastic. If you are hanging a larger mirror, you might want to consult a contractor to help you locate the studs in your walls, as heavy mirrors might rip out of drywall. Most jobs can be done on your own in under 20 minutes, but don't hesitate to hire a professional if you feel uncomfortable.
